Independent Study refers to tasks given to pupils to be completed outside of usual lessons. In the past, we have referred to this as Homework. At St. Peter’s, independent study tasks can include, but is not limited to: completing tasks assigned in lessons, preparing for tasks in future lessons (for example research or pre-reading), routine coursework (where appropriate at GCSE and A Level) revision and flipped learning (where students prepare at home for classroom discussions).
Independent study is used to reinforce learning and links directly to the curriculum in each subject. Throughout the year, revision/preparation for Assessment Points will be set across all key stages up to two weeks before the assessment date. Parents will have information regarding assessments sent to them at the beginning of each academic year so that they can work with the school in supporting pupils when preparing for exams.
Students and parents can find the details of independent study tasks set on Edulink. Year 7 students and Year 12 students, alongside parents, will receive details on how to use and access Edulink in September. In-year new starters to the school will receive this information within their first week of starting. If students and/or parents have any difficulty accessing Edulink they should contact the school as a matter of urgency as this is the schools most regular form of communication with parents.
Teachers will ensure that:
- Independent study tasks are set as per their department policy, with enough time (usually a week) to ensure successful completion and is appropriate for the pupil’s ability
- Tasks are clearly communicated during the lesson and information is uploaded to Edulink
- Any concerns regarding completion of independent study tasks are communicated to parents
Students will ensure that:
- They complete their independent study tasks to the best of their ability, affording the appropriate time to the task(s) set
- Adhere to deadlines and submit their work as prescribed by the teacher (e.g. via email or in person)
Parents/Carers will aim to:
- Provide a suitable place to carry out homework
- Work in partnership with the school to support their child in receiving an excellent education so that they can make a positive difference in our world
Failure to fulfil successful Independent Study tasks will result in the following sanctions:
- Lunch detention set by class teacher on first occasion
- Persistent failure to complete independent study will result in referral to the Head of Department with continued communication with parents/carers. Continued failure to complete tasks will result in referral to the Head of Year.
- At KS5, students who consistently fail to adhere to deadlines, will be put on to a Student Support Plan, this will be communicated to parents/carers.
